Local businesses tagged recycling champions

Five Knoxville businesses have attained the highest ranking in Knox County's new Recycle Champions program, which recognizes leaders in recycling and waste reduction.

Bush Brothers & Co., Earth Fare, Sustainable Future, Thermocopy and Three Rivers Market were recognized as platinum Champions. Carpe Librum Booksellers entered the program as a gold Recycle Champion and Dark Star Transportation and Quality Lumber entered as a silver-level Champion.

Recycle Champions was created by the Knox County Solid Waste department to encourage, assist and recognize local businesses that have outstanding waste-reduction and recycling practices. To become a participant in this program, businesses have to be located in Knox County, undergo a waste audit, post their certification and fulfill at least six optional requirements, which range from recycling cardboard to purchasing items in bulk. Based on the number of optional requirements each business completes, different levels of certification (platinum, gold or silver) are awarded.
